What do I need the first night?

All new members must complete the safety training before being allowed to shoot. The safety training class is given Mondays at 6pm in the McAlexander Fieldhouse Classroom. After the training you will need to pay $5 and present your Oregon State University ID card to the officer in order to check out a rifle. You must bring your OSU ID and Rifle Club membership card to every practice.

Am I required to bring my OSU ID and Rifle Club Membership card every time?

Yes. After your first night, if you would like to continue to shot, you will also need to pay club dues. Once you pay club dues you will receive a Rifle Club membership card and will need to bring both your OSU ID card and your Rifle Club membership card to every practice. If you do not have both your OSU ID and your Rifle Club membership card you will not be allowed to use club rifles or equipment.

How do I join rifle club?

New members are always welcome year round. The first night you attend a rifle club practice you are not responsible for club dues. However, you are responsible for attending the safety training ($5) and purchasing ammunition. The Oregon State Rifle Club provides all equipment necessary to practice for all members of the club.

In addition to hands on training, all club members are also provided with: free targets, free ear protection, and access to club equipment. Equipment provided to all club members includes: rifles, spotting scopes, offhand stands, slings, and shooting jackets. Ammunition is available for purchase as well.

The short version: To become a member, you must:
  • Come to a rifle club practice,
  • Complete the Safety Training ($5),
  • Pass the Safety Training Test,
  • Pay club dues.

Am I required to complete the safety training?

All members--new and returning--must complete the safety training class before they are allowed to shoot on the range. The safety training is $5 and includes one box of ammunition.

Safety Training is held in the Classroom at McAlexander Fieldhouse and is only given Monday nights starting at 6pm and last about an hour. The training covers range rules, safe handling of rifles, safe transportation of rifles, range commands, and competitive shooting positions. After the safety training all club members are welcome to shoot, and are encouraged to ask any questions they might have. Our coaches and officers are always more than happy to answer questions and help shooters improve.

Three safety rules:
1. Always keep the rifle pointed in a safe direction.
2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
3. Always keep the rifle unloaded until ready to use.

What about the Safety Training Test, what is that all about?

The Safety Training Test is given to all prospective new and returning members, upon completion of safety training class. A passing score is 100%. Those who are unable to pass the Safety Training Test will NOT be allowed to shoot. The Safety Training Test cannot be taken more than twice a night, or more than three times in during a single term.

It is the policy of both the Oregon State University, and the Oregon State Rifle Club to never deny membership to this organization to any student on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability, disabled veteran or Vietnam era veteran status.

Accommodations are collaborative efforts between students, faculty and Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). Students with accommodations approved through SSD are responsible for contacting the President to discuss accommodations. Students who believe they are eligible for accommodations but who have not yet obtained approval through SSD should contact SSD immediately at 541-737-4098.
